Javier Arias, cello
Javier Arias was born in Mexico City. He began his musical studies with his father, the composer and violinist Emmanuel Arias y Luna.
Javier Arias is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York, where he was he repicient of the Lincoln Center, Loeb and Cohen Memorial scholarshps. He also did postgraduate studies at Louisiana State University, and was awarded the distinguished Artist Diploma from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Among his teachers are Zara Nelsova, Salomon van den Berg, Ana Elizabeth Berlin and Dennis Parker. Javier Arias was the youngest participant in the 200th anniversary of Bach Seminar in Freiburg, Germany. He also took part in the Course of Phenomenology of Music at the University of Mainz, Germany imparted by Sergiu Celibidache. As founder of the Amernet String Quartet, Javier Arias was awarded the First Prize at the Fifth International String Quartet Competition in Banff, Canada, the First Prize and Gold Medal at the International Music Competition in Tokyo, where he also received the Asahi Special Prize. He was also received the Grand Prize at the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in the USA and the First Prize Competition of Chamber Music Yellow Springs in USA. He also won the First Prize in the National Competition for Young Artists in Mexico.
Javier Arias has been a soloist with various musical groups such as the Mexico State Symphony Orchestra (OSEM), the National Symphony Orchestra (OSN), the Fine Arts Chamber Orchestra of Mexico, Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, EAFIT Symphony Orchestra, the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
As a chamber musician Javier Arias has regularly performed throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia and has given concerts in summer music festivals such as the Mostly Mozart, Ravinia Rising Stars, Interlochen, Tanglewood, Newport, Rockport, Gretna, San Miguel Allende, Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico City, among others.
From 1996 to 2000, Javier Arias was a faculty member of the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where he was the coordinator of Chamber Music. From 2000 to 2004 Mr. Arias became Artist in Residence and professor of cello at the University of Northern Kentucky. There he served as the head of Strings. In that institution he founded the Norse Chamber Music Festival, and was the Artistic Director. In the fall of 2004 Javier Arias became an Artist in Residence and professor of cello at the Florida International University, where he also served as Coordinator of Chamber Music. That same year, he founded the Animato Summer Camp at the same university. Javier Arias has taught at the EAFIT University in Medellin, Colombia since 2009. In that institution he founded Festichelo, a seminar for cellists and cello lovers. In 2013 he was Professor of cello at the New Mexico State University for one year. Currently Javier Arias is pursuing a doctoral degree in Music at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. (UNAM).
Mr. Arias has taught master classes in chamber music cello in the United States, Germany, Belgium, Korea and Mexico. He has also recorded for Gasparo, New World and Centaur.
