Jeffrey Howard, violin
Violinist Dr. Jeffrey Howard has distinguished himself nationally and internationally as an “an excellent virtuoso … (with) a deep understanding of different musical styles, and a remarkable power of communication.” (Franco Gulli)
Born in New York, Dr. Howard has appeared as soloist with many orchestras including the Boston Virtuosi, and the Yonkers, Indiana University, Concord, UT Arlington, Hung Valley, Towson University and WPI Symphony Orchestras. A frequent soloist and guest artist, he has performed at Jordan Hall in Boston, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Bastille Opera House in Paris, Khachaturian Hall in Montreal, Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, and at the Univ. of Texas at Arlington, the Longy School of Music, Oberlin College, the Hochschüle für Müsik in Wurzburg, Germany, and at the Orfeo International Music Festival in Vipiteno, Italy.
Dr. Howard has appeared internationally in Canada, China and in Central and Western Europe, including the countries of Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary and Italy. A devoted performer of chamber music, he has been a member of the Baltimore Piano Trio for 12 years (Cecylia Barczyk, cello and Reynaldo Reyes, piano), and a member of the Kassian-Howard Duo (Anna Soukiassian, piano) for 20 years. He has performed at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Winter Institute for String Quartets, and the Lydian String Quartet Seminar, and studied with members of the Tokyo, Mendelssohn, Juilliard and Cleveland String Quartets, and Menachem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio.
Orchestrally, Dr. Howard has been a regular section sub with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for ten years, and additionally has played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Metamorphosen Chamber Ensemble, Concert Artists of Baltimore, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and as concertmaster for the Concord Orchestra and the Hunt Valley Symphony. He is also a frequent adjudicator for solo, ensemble and orchestral competitions in Maryland.
Dr. Howard received degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University where he completed the Doctorate of Music degree in Violin. His teachers included Stephen Clapp, Paul Biss, and Distinguished Professors Franco Gulli and Josef Gingold, and additional training with Roman Totenberg and Ani Kavafian. He has served on the faculties of the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the University of Texas at Arlington, and Towson University where he is currently Associate Professor of Violin and Chamber Music.
