Yerin Kim, piano
Praised by the Calgary Herald as "lively, ebullient, and spikily accentuated performance...", and the International Piano Magazine as a pianist with a “golden tone” pianist Yerin Kim is an avid chamber musician and recitalist. She has given concerts in various festivals and recitals in major venues internationally, including The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Carnegie Hall in New York, Place Flagey in Brussels and Rolston Hall at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada. Her performances have been broadcast by the Klara Continuo radio station in Belgium, the NPR program Performance Today, WUFT Classic in Florida, and the PBC broadcasting station in Seoul, Korea. Her solo debut album "First and Last Words", works by Robert Schumann and Alfred Schnittke, was released by the Sheva Collection Label in Spring in 2019. Phoenix Classical, one of the foremost promoters of Classical recordings across the world, remarked on the album as “powerful and engaging, very poetic and expressive with some truly original interpretive insights, all performed with a great technique”.
Partnering with her husband and violinist, Brendan Shea as the Shea-Kim Duo, they have competed internationally and performs in festivals and concerts across North America, Europe and Asia. In 2016, their first duo album of sonatas by Beethoven, Schubert, and Janacek was released by Ark Studio in Seoul, South Korea. As a regular lecturer and guest artist, Kim performs and gives talks on promoting awareness of the power of music in the community that it serves. Committed to bringing inspiring concert programs and classical music experience at its highest level to diverse audiences nationally and internationally, Yerin Kim recently joined the Artist roster of Music in Familiar Spaces with the aim of reaching out to new audiences through innovative and accessible concerts. Kim is also the Artistic Director of Summer Chamber Orchestra Intensive at Indiana University South Bend, coaching chamber music to pre-college students in South Bend, Indiana.
Kim is equally passionate in teaching and has previously held performance and pedagogical faculty positions at Indiana University Bloomington's pre-college. She also taught undergraduate and graduate students and coached chamber groups at State University of New York Stony Brook as a teaching assistant to the Piano Department and also as a chamber music faculty at the pre-college division. She recently joined the piano faculty of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana where she coaches and performs with graduate voice majors as well as teaches applied piano to undergraduate and graduate music students. She is also on the faculty of Chugye University for the Arts Conservatory in Seoul, South Korea as Visiting Professor of piano.
Kim holds a Double Degree in Piano Performance and Psychology from Oberlin conservatory and college, a Master of Music from Indiana University Bloomington, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. Her mentors and teachers include Hans Boepple, Seunghae Choi, Haewon Song, Arnaldo Cohen, Jean-Louis Haguenauer, and Gilbert Kalish.
